Theology - I'd define it as knowledge of God, and His interaction with the universe. That's probably a terrible definition, but hey, that's what I got. If you don't like it... well... go check out http://marshillchurch.org or something. So how does theology relate to you?? Well, I believe it's of utmost importance for everyone, since we will all one day be judged by God, and because that judgement is between heaven and hell. And since theology is so crucially important, our goal should be to seek the rights actions and right character that stem from knowing God as He is. And that's pretty much all I have to say.
But I want to make that point within our culture, and point out how messed up things are. We live in an economy based on capitalism... based on choice. We're selfish and we want what we like. We choose what is best for us and our ambitions. Unfortunately, this attitude and mindset flows over into Christianity. But the truth is that we are not consumers of anything when it comes to God.
We are children receiving instruction. We are soldiers taking orders. We are sheep needing direction. We are lost and we need directions. With travel more available, and people becoming more wealthy, I'm assuming that there are more churches available to us than ever. And it gives us the ability to choose which church we attend. We choose which sermons we listen to, and even what portions of our bibles we read.
It's no mystery why people choose Joel Osteen over Jonathan Edwards' sinners in the hands of an angry God. People like good news, and they dislike bad news. People like the idea of a God who is loving and gives blessings, and we dislike the idea of a God who judges, brings forth wrath, and lives for His glory alone. But we cannot bring our consumer mindset into this realm, because there is one God, and He is who He is. He does not change like shifting shadows, He is the same God yesterday, today, and forever. And yet people constantly and consistently chase these stupid Christian fads which emphasize anything besides God's glory, the Bible, or the Church being the Church. All because they'd rather make their own imaginary fairy tale god and call him Jesus. Or they contort the God who is into something that drastically misses the mark.
God is God. And our highest goal is not to paint the picture we think He should look like. We are to look to Him, and the Bible He gave us in order to see Him as He truly is. And we should do it humbly, and with fear, knowing that our eternities rest in His hands alone.
So if you're reading books or listening to sermons or attending a church which have the end goal of a happy and fulfilling life, turn that crap off. God's been doing big things for thousands of years through His people. Your 80some odd years are a speck compared to what He's up to. Get your head in the game, and get on board.
